- Landscape architect licensure (Texas)
- In Texas landscape architects are licensed by the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners — the same board that licenses architects and registers interior designers. The path runs through an accredited degree, documented experience, and the CLARB-administered LARE exam. 'Landscape architect' is a protected title; 'landscape designer' is not.
- Seal and stamp
- The registered landscape architect's seal applied to drawings, taking legal responsibility for the sealed work. Many jurisdictions and institutional clients require sealed landscape plans, which is the practical reason a design-only firm cannot substitute for a licensed practice.
- Scope boundary with civil engineering
- Landscape architects handle site layout, planting, hardscape and site grading; civil engineers handle utilities, structural drainage systems, roadway design and stormwater infrastructure sizing. The two overlap on grading and drainage, and the split is negotiated project by project in the contract, not assumed.
- Environmental Criteria Manual (ECM)
- The City of Austin's technical manual governing environmental site work — water quality controls, tree protection standards, revegetation, erosion control and landscape requirements. It is where the enforceable design criteria live, separate from the Land Development Code that grants the authority.
- Land Development Code (LDC)
- Austin's zoning and development regulations — use, setbacks, height, site development standards, landscape and parking requirements. Determines what can be built before design begins, and changes to it move the ground under every site plan in progress.
- Impervious cover limit
- The maximum share of a site that may be covered by roofs, paving and other surfaces that shed water, set by zoning and by watershed classification. In Austin's environmentally sensitive watersheds it is often the binding constraint on a project's program, and it is what pushes designs toward permeable paving and reduced drive aisles.
- Heritage tree ordinance
- Austin's protection for the largest specimens of designated species, which may only be removed under narrow administrative or commission-approved circumstances. Discovering a heritage tree late in design is the classic Austin schedule killer.
- Protected tree
- A tree above the ordinance's diameter threshold but below heritage size, requiring a permit to remove and mitigation when removal is approved. Diameter is measured at breast height (DBH), and multi-trunk measurement rules matter more than people expect.
- Critical root zone (CRZ)
- The circular area around a trunk where the roots that keep the tree alive are concentrated, conventionally sized at one foot of radius per inch of trunk diameter. Half-CRZ and quarter-CRZ thresholds govern how much disturbance triggers review, and the CRZ — not the canopy — is what construction fencing protects.
- Tree survey and mitigation
- A surveyed inventory of trees with species, size, condition and location, plus the replacement inches, fee payments or preservation credits owed when removal is permitted. The survey is a prerequisite to meaningful site design, not a checklist item at permit.
- Save Our Springs (SOS) Ordinance
- Austin's 1992 voter-approved ordinance imposing strict impervious cover caps and a no-degradation water quality standard on development in the Barton Springs Zone. Projects in the SOS zone follow rules materially tighter than the rest of the city.
- Edwards Aquifer recharge and contributing zones
- Mapped zones where surface water enters or flows toward the Edwards Aquifer. Land in the recharge zone drains directly into the aquifer through fractured limestone and karst features, which is why development there carries the region's most restrictive water quality obligations.
- TCEQ Edwards rules and WPAP
- Texas Commission on Environmental Quality regulations requiring approval of a Water Pollution Abatement Plan before regulated construction over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone, with contributing zone plans for upstream land. State approval runs parallel to city review and on its own schedule.
- Water quality controls and biofiltration
- Engineered features — biofiltration basins, rain gardens, vegetative filter strips, sand filters — that treat runoff before discharge. Biofiltration is the type most often integrated into the visible landscape, which makes planting selection and soil media a water quality decision, not an aesthetic one.
- Detention vs retention
- Detention temporarily holds runoff and releases it at a controlled rate to protect downstream capacity; retention holds water without a surface outlet, relying on infiltration or evaporation. They solve different problems and are frequently confused in early site planning.
- Curve Number and runoff coefficient
- The parameters converting rainfall into runoff volume and peak flow — the NRCS Curve Number reflecting soil group and cover, and the rational-method runoff coefficient C. Reducing impervious cover and adding soil depth moves these numbers, which is how landscape decisions show up in drainage calculations.
- TSS removal
- Total suspended solids removal, the standard performance metric a water quality control must demonstrate. Regulatory credit for a treatment feature is usually expressed as a required TSS removal percentage.
- Drainage Criteria Manual (DCM)
- Austin's manual specifying design storms, hydrologic methods, conveyance capacity, detention sizing and floodplain analysis. It sets the arithmetic the grading and drainage design has to satisfy.
- Floodplain
- Land mapped as subject to inundation at a defined recurrence interval, restricting fill, structures and grading. Austin also regulates a locally derived floodplain in addition to the federal maps, so a site can be constrained even when FEMA's map looks clear.
- Riparian buffer / Critical Water Quality Zone
- Protected setbacks along creeks and waterways where development, clearing and grading are limited to preserve stream function and water quality. In Austin these zones are a hard line on a site plan and often the reason a building footprint moves.
- Revegetation and native seeding
- Restoring disturbed ground with native seed mixes rather than sod or non-native turf. Timing, seed bed preparation, temporary irrigation and cover crops determine success, and Austin's environmental criteria require revegetation of disturbed areas.
- Watering restrictions and conservation stages
- Austin Water's drought contingency stages, which limit which days and hours automatic irrigation and hose-end watering are allowed. Because stages can tighten mid-project, a design that only survives under unrestricted watering is a design that will fail.
- Irrigation licensing in Texas
- TCEQ licenses landscape irrigators and irrigation technicians, and irrigation plans for regulated systems must be prepared under a licensed professional. A landscape architect coordinates the irrigation design but does not automatically hold the irrigator license.
- Drip vs spray irrigation
- Drip and subsurface emitters deliver water slowly at the root zone with very low evaporative loss and are favored in beds; spray and rotor heads cover turf and large areas but lose more to wind and evaporation. Most water conservation gains come from converting beds to drip and hydrozoning the two apart.
- ET-based controller
- A smart irrigation controller that adjusts run times from evapotranspiration data or local weather rather than a fixed clock schedule, watering to actual plant demand. Frequently rebate-eligible and increasingly expected on commercial projects.
- Xeriscape
- A water-conserving design approach built on planning and zoning, soil improvement, efficient irrigation, appropriate plant selection, mulching, practical turf areas and maintenance. It means low water use through design — not gravel yards and not the absence of plants.
- Plant palette and USDA hardiness zone 8b/9a
- The curated species list for a project, bounded by the site's cold hardiness zone. The 2023 USDA map placed much of the Austin area at 8b to 9a, a shift warmer than earlier maps — but heat tolerance, drought tolerance and soil pH constrain Central Texas palettes at least as much as cold hardiness does.
- Native and adapted plant list
- Species native to the region plus non-natives proven to thrive without supplemental inputs. Many Austin landscape requirements and rebate programs are written against such lists, so palette selection has a compliance dimension as well as a horticultural one.
- Soil amendment and decompaction
- Improving construction-compacted subsoil with organic matter, tillage or soil volume so roots can establish. Central Texas's shallow soils over limestone make imported and amended soil depth a real line item, and skipping it is the most common cause of failed planting.
- Hardscape
- The built, non-living portion of the landscape — paving, walls, steps, decks, edging, site furniture. It usually carries the majority of landscape construction cost and drives the detail set.
- Paving unit
- The modular element a paved surface is built from — brick, concrete paver, stone, or decomposed granite as an alternative surface. Unit dimension drives layout dimensions, and coordinating paving modules with building grid and ADA requirements is core site design craft.
- Permeable paving
- Porous asphalt, pervious concrete or open-jointed unit pavers over an aggregate reservoir that lets water infiltrate rather than run off. It can reduce effective impervious cover and stormwater volume where soils and code allow, but it requires a maintenance commitment to stay permeable.
- Grading and spot elevations
- The finished-surface design expressed through contours and specific point elevations at walks, walls, doors, drains and paving corners. Spot elevations are how a landscape architect actually controls whether a site drains, and they are where constructability succeeds or fails.
- ADA slope and cross slope
- Accessible routes are limited to a five percent running slope before ramp provisions apply, with cross slope generally capped near two percent. On sloped Central Texas sites these limits, not aesthetics, usually dictate where walks, ramps and landings go.
- Retaining wall design threshold
- Above a common four-foot height, or when surcharged by adjacent loads, retaining walls typically require engineered design and a permit. Below that a landscape architect may detail the wall directly — so a wall a few inches taller changes the consultant team and the budget.
- Planting plan and specification
- The drawing locating every plant with symbol, quantity and size, plus the written specification governing plant quality, nursery stock standards, soil, installation and acceptance. The specification is what makes plant quality enforceable during construction.
- Plant establishment period
- The defined post-installation window — commonly a growing season or a year — during which the contractor waters, monitors and replaces failed plants before the warranty and owner maintenance begin. In a drought climate it is the most valuable line in the contract.
- Maintenance plan
- The written regimen handed to the owner covering irrigation scheduling, pruning, mulch renewal, fertilization, weed control and seasonal tasks. Without one, native and low-water designs are routinely maintained to death by crews trained on turf.
- SITES certification
- The Sustainable SITES Initiative rating system for landscapes, administered by GBCI, awarding certification levels for soil, vegetation, water, materials and human health performance. It is the closest thing landscape architecture has to LEED, and it can apply to projects with no building at all.
- LEED Sustainable Sites credits
- The LEED credit category covering site selection, open space, rainwater management, heat island reduction and light pollution — the credits landscape scope directly earns on a building project, and the reason a landscape architect belongs in early LEED charrettes.
- Parkland dedication and fee-in-lieu
- A requirement that new residential development dedicate land for parks or pay a fee based on unit count. Whether a project dedicates or pays reshapes the site plan entirely, and dedicated land brings its own design, access and quality standards.
- Public art and percent-for-art
- Programs allocating a fixed percentage of eligible capital project budgets to commissioned public art — Austin runs its through Art in Public Places. On civic work the landscape architect coordinates siting, foundations, lighting and utilities for the artwork.
- Streetscape standards
- Municipal requirements for the zone between building and curb — sidewalk width, furnishing and clear zones, street trees and soil volume, lighting, and accessible transitions. It is public-realm design delivered through private development obligations.
- Urban heat island
- The measurable temperature increase in developed areas from heat-absorbing paving and roofs and lost vegetation. In an Austin summer this is a habitability and liability issue, and shade and reflective surfaces are the landscape's direct levers on it.
- Shade coverage and tree canopy goal
- Shade measured as the share of a walk, plaza or parking area covered at a specified time of day, and canopy measured as citywide tree cover from aerial analysis. Cities including Austin set canopy targets and increasingly write shade requirements into parking and streetscape standards.
- Design fee structures
- The three common bases for landscape architecture fees — a percentage of landscape construction cost, hourly against a not-to-exceed, or a per-acre rate on large planning work. Percentage aligns fee with scope but penalizes value engineering; hourly protects the firm on unclear scope; per-acre suits master planning where construction cost is unknown.
